Rodelinda is Handel's finest theatrical accomplishment, the opera in which the music and the drama are most affectively integrated and consistently inspired. Part of its success results from a libretto based on a play be the great French dramatist Pierre Corneille, the only libretto of any Handel opera, in my opinion, that isn't marred by extraneous bombast or silliness.

Though his large scale English language works written for the theatre are technically oratorios and not operas, several of them, such as Semele, have become an important part of the opera repertoire. Other English language oratorios which are sometimes fully staged as operas include Saul, Samson, Hercules, Belshazzar, Theodora and Jephtha. Parnasso in festa, a festa teatrale comp Handel’s Rinaldo—an opera in three acts first premiered at London’s Queen’s Theater in 1711—is brought to life in a thoroughly contemporary flavor in the Glyndebourne Festival’s 2012 production. Glyndebourne Festival Opera is an annual opera festival held at Glyndebourne, an English country house near Lewes, in East Sussex, England.

Feuding parties are cut down to size in this likeable production for the country opera house by director Robert Carsen, who has a gift for charm. I have seen my share of dusty, mothballed productions of Handel operas and at this point I look forward to modern productions; it seems Handel, and opera seria in general can work particularly well in highly stylized stagings and this Glyndebourne version, directed by Jean-Marie Villegier, is a feast for the eyes, ears and the brain; there's no powdered wig or corset in sight, and the modern 2019-02-24 · There are, after all, a number of Handel Operas which would suit the theatre at Glyndebourne so why choose an oratorio?

Handel operas at glyndebourne

Rinaldo was Handel’s first opera in London, and also the first Italian opera specially devised for the English stage. The fact hat Rinaldo succeeded where other Italian operas had failed was down to two factors: the opera was devised specifically for English tastes; The opera was championed and marketed with great skill by Aaron Hill, director of London’s Haymarket Theatre.
